4. 孟子ㅣ 之平陸샤 謂其大夫曰子之持戟之士ㅣ 一日而三失伍(ㅣ면) 則去之[아] 否乎아 曰不待三이니이다(이리이다)

集註

平陸은 齊下邑也라 大夫는 邑宰也라 戟은 有枝兵也라 士는 戰士也라 伍는 行列也라 去之는 殺之也라

然則子之失伍也ㅣ 亦多矣로다(니) 凶年饑歲애(예) 子之民이 老羸[] 轉於溝壑고 壯者[] 散而之四方者ㅣ 幾千人矣오 曰此非距心之所得爲也ㅣ니이다

集註

子之失伍는 言其失職이 猶士之失伍也라 距心은 大夫名이라 對言此乃王之失政使然이니 非我所得專爲也라하니라

曰今有受人之牛羊而爲之牧之者(댄) 則必爲之求牧與芻矣리니 求牧與芻而不得(이면) 則反諸其人乎아 抑亦立而視其死與아 曰此則距心之罪也ㅣ로소이다

牧之는 養之也라 牧은 牧地也요 芻는 草也라 孟子言若不得自專이면 何不致其事而去오하시니라

他日에 見於王曰王之爲都者를() 臣知五人焉이로니 知其罪者[] 惟孔距心이러이다고(이라시고) 爲王誦之신대 王曰此則寡人之罪也ㅣ로소이다

集註

爲都는 治邑也라 邑有先君之廟曰都라 孔은 大夫姓也라 爲王誦其語는 欲以風曉王也라 ○ 陳氏曰孟子一言而齊之君臣이 擧知其罪니 固足以興邦矣로되 然而齊卒不得爲善國者는 豈非說而不繹, 從而不改故邪아

4. 맹자께서 제나라 변경의 평륙(平陸)에 가셔서 그 고을의 대부(大夫) 공거심(孔距心)에게 이르셨다. “당신의 창을 잡은 전사(戰士)가 하루에 세 번 대오(隊伍)를 이탈한다면 버리겠습니까? 그대로 두겠습니까?” 공거심이 대답하였다. “세 번까지 기다리지 않겠습니다.”

[James Legge] Mencius having gone to P'ing-lû, addressed the governor of it, saying, 'If one of your spearmen should lose his place in the ranks three times in one day, would you, Sir, put him to death or not?' 'I would not wait for three times to do so,' was the reply.

“그렇다면 당신이 대오를 이탈한 것도 많습니다. 흉년으로 기근이 든 해에 당신의 백성 중에 노약자들은 떠돌다 죽어 시신이 구렁에 버려지고, 건장한 자들은 흩어져 사방으로 떠나간 것이 몇천 명이나 됩니까?” “그 일은 제 능력으로 할 수 있는 일이 아닙니다.”

[James Legge] Mencius said, 'Well then, you, Sir, have likewise lost your place in the ranks many times. In bad calamitous years, and years of famine, the old and feeble of your people, who have been found lying in the ditches and water-channels, and the able-bodied, who have been scattered about to the four quarters, have amounted to several thousand.' The governor replied, 'That is a state of things in which it does not belong to me Chü-hsin to act.'

“지금 남의 소와 양을 맡아 그 주인을 위해 길러주는 자가 있으면 반드시 소와 양을 위해 목장(牧場)과 꼴을 구할 것이니, 목장과 꼴을 구하다가 얻지 못하면 그 주인에게 소와 양을 돌려주어야 하겠습니까? 아니면 또한 소와 양이 죽는 것을 서서 보고만 있어야 하겠습니까?” “이는 저의 잘못입니다.”

[James Legge] 'Here,' said Mencius, 'is a man who receives charge of the cattle and sheep of another, and undertakes to feed them for him;-- of course he must search for pasture-ground and grass for them. If, after searching for those, he cannot find them, will he return his charge to the owner? or will he stand by and see them die?' 'Herein,' said the officer, 'I am guilty.'

후일에 맹자께서 왕을 뵙고 말씀하셨다. “왕의 읍을 다스리는 자를 신(臣)이 다섯 사람을 알고 있는데, 자기의 죄를 알고 있는 자는 오직 공거심뿐입니다.” 그리고는 왕에게 그 내용을 말하자, 왕이 말하였다. “이는 과인의 죄입니다.”

[James Legge] Another day, Mencius had an audience of the king, and said to him, 'Of the governors of your Majesty's cities I am acquainted with five, but the only one of them who knows his faults is K'ung Chü-hsin.' He then repeated the conversation to the king, who said, 'In this matter, I am the guilty one.'
