5. 梁惠王[이] 曰 晉國[이] 天下[애] 莫强焉(은) 叟之所知也ㅣ라(ㅣ니) 及寡人之身야 東敗於齊예 長子[ㅣ] 死焉고 西喪地於秦七百里고 南辱於楚니 寡人[이] 恥之야 願比死者[야] 一洒之노니 如之何則可ㅣ니잇고
集註
魏는 本晉大夫魏斯가 與韓氏趙氏로 共分晉地여 號曰 三晉이라 故로 惠王이 猶自謂晉國이라 惠王三十年에 齊擊魏여 破其軍고 虜太子申며 十七年에 秦取魏少梁고 後에 魏又數獻地於秦며 又與楚將昭陽戰敗여 亡其七邑니라 比는 猶爲也니 言欲爲死者여 雪其恥也라
孟子ㅣ 對曰 地方百里而可以王이니이다
集註
百里는 小國也라 然이나 能行仁政이면 則天下之民이 歸之矣라
王如施仁政於民샤 省刑罰시며 薄稅斂시면(샤) 深耕易耨고 壯者ㅣ 以暇日[로] 修其孝悌忠信야 入以事其父兄며(고) 出以事其長上리니(케시면) 可使制梃야 以撻秦楚之堅甲利兵矣리이다

省刑罰, 薄稅斂此二者는 仁政之大目也라 易는 治也요 耨는 耘也라 盡己之謂忠이요 以實之謂信이라 君行仁政이면 則民得盡力於農畝고 而又有暇日以修禮義라 是以로 尊君親上여 而樂於效死也라
彼[ㅣ] 奪其民時야 使不得耕耨야 以養其父母면 父母[ㅣ] 凍餓며 兄弟妻子[ㅣ] 離散리니

彼는 謂敵國也라
彼ㅣ 陷溺其民이어든 王[이] 往而征之시면 夫誰與王敵이리잇고

陷은 陷於阱이요 溺은 溺於水니 暴虐之意라 征은 正也라 以彼暴虐其民으로 而率吾尊君親上之民여 往正其罪면 彼民이 方怨其上여 而樂歸於我리니 則誰與我爲敵哉리오
故[로] 曰 仁者 無敵이라니 王請勿疑하쇼셔

仁者無敵은 蓋古語也라 百里可王은 以此而已니 恐王疑其迂闊이라 故로 勉使勿疑也라 ○ 孔氏曰 惠王之志는 在於報怨고 孟子之論은 在於救民니 所謂惟天吏則可以伐之니 蓋孟子之本意시니라


5. 양나라 혜왕이 말하였다. “우리 진(晉)나라가 천하에 막강하다는 사실은 노선생께서도 아시는 바입니다. 그런데 과인(寡人)의 대에 이르러 동쪽으로는 제(齊)나라에게 패전하여 맏아들이 전사하였고, 서쪽으로는 진(秦)나라에게 영토를 700리나 잃었으며, 남쪽으로는 초(楚)나라에게 모욕을 당하였습니다. 과인이 이를 부끄러워하여 전사한 자를 위해서 한번 설욕하고자 하는데 어떻게 하면 되겠습니까?”
[James Legge] King Hûi of Liang said, 'There was not in the nation a stronger State than Tsin, as you, venerable Sir, know. But since it descended to me, on the east we have been defeated by Ch'i, and then my eldest son perished; on the west we have lost seven hundred lî of territory to Ch'in; and on the south we have sustained disgrace at the hands of Ch'û. I have brought shame on my departed predecessors, and wish on their account to wipe it away, once for all. What course is to be pursued to accomplish this?'
맹자께서 대답하셨다. “땅이 사방 100리만 되어도 그것을 가지고 천하에 왕 노릇할 수 있습니다.
[James Legge] Mencius replied, 'With a territory which is only a hundred lî square, it is possible to attain to the royal dignity.
왕께서 만일 인정(仁政)을 베풀어 형벌을 줄이시고 세금을 적게 거두신다면, 백성들이 여유가 있어서 밭을 깊이 갈고 김을 잘 맬 것이며, 장성한 자들이 여가를 이용하여 효제(孝悌)와 충신(忠信)을 닦아서, 들어가서는 부형(父兄)을 섬기며 나가서는 어른과 상관을 섬길 것이니, 이렇다면 이들로 하여금 몽둥이를 만들어 진(秦)나라와 초(楚)나라의 견고한 갑옷과 예리한 병기를 상대하게 할 수 있을 것입니다.
[James Legge] If Your Majesty will indeed dispense a benevolent government to the people, being sparing in the use of punishments and fines, and making the taxes and levies light, so causing that the fields shall be ploughed deep, and the weeding of them be carefully attended to, and that the strong-bodied, during their days of leisure, shall cultivate their filial piety, fraternal respectfulness, sincerity, and truthfulness, serving thereby, at home, their fathers and elder brothers, and, abroad, their elders and superiors,-- you will then have a people who can be employed, with sticks which they have prepared, to oppose the strong mail and sharp weapons of the troops of Ch'in and Ch'û.
반면에 저 적국의 군주가 자기 백성들의 농사철을 빼앗아 백성들로 하여금 밭 갈고 김을 매어서 그 부모를 봉양하지 못하게 하면, 부모는 추위에 떨고 굶주리며 형제와 처자식은 뿔뿔이 흩어질 것입니다.
[James Legge] The rulers of those States rob their people of their time, so that they cannot plough and weed their fields, in order to support their parents. Their parents suffer from cold and hunger. Brothers, wives, and children are separated and scattered abroad.
저들이 이처럼 그 백성을 도탄에 빠뜨리거든 왕께서 그때 가서 정벌하신다면 누가 왕과 대적하겠습니까?
[James Legge] Those rulers, as it were, drive their people into pit-falls, or drown them. Your Majesty will go to punish them. In such a case, who will oppose your Majesty?
그러므로 옛말에 ‘인자(仁者)에게는 대적할 사람이 없다[仁者無敵].’고 한 것이니, 왕께서는 제 말을 의심하지 마십시오.” 진(晉)나라가 분할되어 위(魏)나라‧한(韓)나라‧조(趙)나라가 되었으므로 이렇게 말한 것이다.
[James Legge] 'In accordance with this is the saying,-- "The benevolent has no enemy." I beg your Majesty not to doubt what I say.'
