23. 其次 致曲이니 曲能有誠이니 誠則形고 形則著고 著則明고 明則動고 動則變고 變則化ㅣ니 唯天下至誠이(이아) 爲能化ㅣ니라

23 . 그 다음은 한쪽을 미루어 지극히 하는 것이니, 한쪽을 미루어 지극히 하면 성(誠)해질 수 있다. 성(誠)하면 나타나고, 나타나면 더욱 뚜렷해지고, 더욱 뚜렷해지면 밝아지고, 밝아지면 감동시키고, 감동시키면 변(變)하고, 변(變)하면 화(化)할 수 있으니, 오직 천하에 지극히 성(誠)한 분이라야 화(化)할 수 있다.

23 . [James Legge] Next to the above is he who cultivates to the utmost the shoots of goodness in him. From those he can attain to the possession of sincerity. This sincerity becomes apparent. From being apparent, it becomes manifest. From being manifest, it becomes brilliant. Brilliant, it affects others. Affecting others, they are changed by it. Changed by it, they are transformed. It is only he who is possessed of the most complete sincerity that can exist under heaven, who can transform.
