14. 孟子[ㅣ] 曰人之於身也애 兼所愛니 兼所愛(면) 則兼所養也ㅣ라 無尺寸之膚[] 不愛焉(이라) 則無尺寸之膚[] 不養也ㅣ니 所以考其善不善者 豈有他哉리오 於己[예] 取之而已矣니라

集註

人於一身에 固當兼養이라 然이나 欲考其所養之善否者는 惟在反之於身여 以審其輕重而已矣니라

體[ㅣ] 有貴賤[며] 有小大니(라) 無以小害大며 無以賤害貴니 養其小者ㅣ() 爲小人이오 養其大者ㅣ() 爲大人이니라

賤而小者는 口腹也요 貴而大者는 心志也라

今有場師ㅣ 舍其梧檟고 養其樲棘면(이면) 則爲賤場師焉이니라

場師는 治場圃者라 梧는 桐也요 檟는 梓也니 皆美材也라 樲棘은 小棗니 非美材也라

養其一指고 而失其肩背而不知也ㅣ면 則爲狼疾人也ㅣ니라

集註

狼은 善顧나 疾則不能이라 故로 以爲失肩背之喩니라

飮食之人을 則人賤之矣니 爲其養小以失大也ㅣ니라

集註

飮食之人은 專養口腹者也라

飮食之人이 無有失也ㅣ면 則口腹이 豈適爲尺寸之膚哉리오

集註

此는 言若使專養口腹而能不失其大體면 則口腹之養은 軀命所關이니 不但爲尺寸之膚而已라 但養小之人은 無不失其大者라 故로 口腹이 雖所當養이나 而終不可以小害大, 賤害貴也니라

14. 맹자께서 말씀하셨다. “사람이 자기 몸에 대해서는 머리끝부터 발끝까지 구별 없이 사랑하니, 머리끝부터 발끝까지 구별 없이 사랑한다면 머리끝부터 발끝까지 구별 없이 기른다. 한 자와 한 치의 살갗도 사랑하지 않음이 없으면, 한 자와 한 치의 살갗도 기르지 않음이 없을 것이니, 자신의 몸을 잘 기르는지 잘못 기르는지 살피는 방법은 어찌 다른 데 있겠는가? 자기에게서 취할 뿐이다.

[James Legge] Mencius said, 'There is no part of himself which a man does not love, and as he loves all, so he must nourish all. There is not an inch of skin which he does not love, and so there is not an inch of skin which he will not nourish. For examining whether his way of nourishing be good or not, what other rule is there but this, that he determine by reflecting on himself where it should be applied?

몸에는 귀한 것과 천한 것이 있으며 작은 것과 큰 것이 있으니, 작은 것을 가지고 큰 것을 해치지 말며, 천한 것을 가지고 귀한 것을 해치지 말아야 한다. 작은 것을 기르는 자는 소인(小人)이 되고, 큰 것을 기르는 자는 대인(大人)이 된다.

[James Legge] 'Some parts of the body are noble, and some ignoble; some great, and some small. The great must not be injured for the small, nor the noble for the ignoble. He who nourishes the little belonging to him is a little man, and he who nourishes the great is a great man.

지금 원예사가 오동나무와 가래나무를 놓아두고 가시나무를 기른다면, 쓸모없는 원예사라고 할 것이다.

[James Legge] 'Here is a plantation-keeper, who neglects his wû and chiâ, and cultivates his sour jujube-trees;-- he is a poor plantation-keeper.

자신의 손가락 하나만 기르고 어깨와 등을 잃으면서도 알지 못한다면, 이는 정상적인 사람이 아니다.

[James Legge] 'He who nourishes one of his fingers, neglecting his shoulders or his back, without knowing that he is doing so, is a man who resembles a hurried wolf.

음식을 밝히는 사람을 사람들이 천하게 여기니, 작은 것을 기르고 큰 것을 잃기 때문이다.

[James Legge] 'A man who only eats and drinks is counted mean by others;-- because he nourishes what is little to the neglect of what is great.

〉음식을 밝히는 사람이 입과 배를 기르면서도 큰 것을 기름을 잃지 않을 수 있다면, 입으로 먹고 배로 소화시키는 것이 어찌 다만 한 자나 한 치의 살갗이 될 뿐이겠는가?”

[James Legge] 'If a man, fond of his eating and drinking, were not to neglect what is of more importance, how should his mouth and belly be considered as no more than an inch of skin?'
