4. 彭更이 問曰後車數十乘과 從者數百人으로 以傳食於諸侯ㅣ 不以泰乎ㅣ잇가(잇가) 孟子[ㅣ] 曰非其道(댄) 則一簞食ㅣ라도 不可受於人이어니와 如其道(댄) 則舜이 受堯之天下샤 不以爲泰시니 子[ㅣ] 以爲泰乎아

彭更은 孟子弟子也라 泰는 侈也라

曰否ㅣ라 士ㅣ 無事而食이 不可也ㅣ니이다

集註

言不以舜爲泰요 但謂今之士無功而食人之食이 則不可也라

曰子[ㅣ] 不通功易事야 以羨補不足이면 則農有餘粟며 女有餘布ㅣ어니와 子如通之면(댄) 則梓匠輪輿ㅣ 皆得食於子리니 於此有人焉니 入則孝고 出則悌야(며) 守先王之道야 以待後之學者호(며) 而不得食於子니(ㅣ로소니) 子[ㅣ] 何尊梓匠輪輿고 而輕爲仁義者哉오

集註

通功易事는 謂通人之功而交易其事라 羨은 餘也라 有餘는 言無所貿易而積於無用也라 梓人, 匠人은 木工也요 輪人, 輿人은 車工也라

曰梓匠輪輿 其志[ㅣ] 將以求食也ㅣ어니와 君子之爲道也도 其志[ㅣ] 亦將以求食與잇가 曰子[ㅣ] 何以其志爲哉오 其有功於子애(야) 可食而食之矣니(니라) 且子 食志乎아 食功乎아 曰食志니이다

孟子言自我而言이면 固不求食이어니와 自彼而言이면 凡有功者를 則當食之니라

曰有人於此니 毁瓦畫墁이오 其志[ㅣ] 將以求食也(댄) 則子[ㅣ] 食之乎아 曰否ㅣ라(이다) 曰然則子[ㅣ] 非食志也ㅣ라 食功也ㅣ로다

集註

墁은 牆壁之飾也라 毁瓦畫墁은 言無功而有害也라 旣曰食功이면 則以士爲無事而食者는 眞尊梓匠輪輿而輕爲仁義者矣니라

4. 맹자의 제자 팽경(彭更)이 여쭈었다. “뒤따르는 수레 수십 대와 수행하는 자 수백 명을 거느리고, 제후들을 찾아다니며 밥을 얻어먹는 것은 너무 지나치지 않습니까?” 맹자께서 말씀하셨다. “정당한 도리가 아니라면 한 그릇의 밥이라도 남에게 받아서는 안 되지만, 만일 정당한 도리라면 순(舜)임금께서 요(堯)임금의 천하를 받으시되 지나치다고 여기지 않으셨으니, 자네는 이것을 지나치다고 여기는가?”

[James Legge] P'ang Kang asked Mencius, saying, 'Is it not an extravagant procedure to go from one prince to another and live upon them, followed by several tens of carriages, and attended by several hundred men?' Mencius replied, 'If there be not a proper ground for taking it, a single bamboo-cup of rice may not be received from a man. If there be such a proper ground, then Shun's receiving the kingdom from Yâo is not to be considered excessive. Do you think it was excessive?'

“아닙니다. 선비가 하는 일 없이 밥을 얻어먹는 것이 불가하다는 것입니다.”

[James Legge] Kang said, 'No. But for a scholar performing no service to receive his support notwithstanding is improper.'

“자네가 생산한 물건을 교역하고 일을 바꾸어, 남는 것을 가지고 부족한 것을 보충하지 않는다면, 농부에게는 남아서 버리는 곡식이 있을 것이고, 여자에게는 남아서 버리는 베가 있을 것이네. 그러나 자네가 만일 이를 교역하면 목수들과 수레 만드는 사람들이 모두 자네 덕분에 먹고살 수 있을 것이네. 여기에 어떤 사람이 있는데, 집에 들어와서는 부모에게 효도하고 밖에 나가면 어른에게 공손하며[入則孝出則悌], 선왕(先王)의 도를 지키면서 후세의 학자를 기다리되 자네에게서 밥을 얻어먹지 못할 것이니, 자네는 어찌하여 목수들과 수레 만드는 사람들은 높이면서 인의(仁義)를 힘쓰는 자는 경시하는가?”

[James Legge] Mencius answered, 'If you do not have an intercommunication of the productions of labour, and an interchange of men's services, so that one from his overplus may supply the deficiency of another, then husbandmen will have a superfluity of grain, and women will have a superfluity of cloth. If you have such an interchange, carpenters and carriage-wrights may all get their food from you. Here now is a man, who, at home, is filial, and abroad, respectful to his elders; who watches over the principles of the ancient kings, awaiting the rise of future learners:-- and yet you will refuse to support him. How is it that you give honour to the carpenter and carriage-wright, and slight him who practises benevolence and righteousness?'

“목수들과 수레 만드는 사람은 일을 하는 뜻이 밥을 구하려는 것이지만, 군자가 도를 행하는 것도 그 뜻이 밥을 구하려는 것입니까?” “자네는 어찌 그 뜻을 따지는가? 어떤 사람이 자네에게 일해준 공(功)이 있어서 밥을 먹여줄 만하면 밥을 먹여주는 것이네. 또 자네는 그 사람이 가지고 있는 뜻을 따져서 밥을 먹여주겠는가? 아니면 그 사람이 이룬 공을 따져서 밥을 먹여주겠는가?” “뜻을 따져서 밥을 먹여주겠습니다.”

[James Legge] P'ang Kang said, 'The aim of the carpenter and carriagewright is by their trades to seek for a living. Is it also the aim of the superior man in his practice of principles thereby to seek for a living?' 'What have you to do,' returned Mencius, 'with his purpose? He is of service to you. He deserves to be supported, and should be supported. And let me ask,-- Do you remunerate a man's intention, or do you remunerate his service.' To this Kang replied, 'I remunerate his intention.'

“여기에 어떤 사람이 있는데, 기왓장을 깨뜨리고 담에 함부로 낙서를 해놓고도 그 뜻이 장차 밥을 구하는 것이라면, 자네는 그에게 밥을 먹여주겠는가?” “아닙니다.” “그러면 자네는 뜻을 따져서 밥을 먹여주는 것이 아니라, 공을 따져서 밥을 먹여주는 것이네.”

[James Legge] Mencius said, 'There is a man here, who breaks your tiles, and draws unsightly figures on your walls;-- his purpose may be thereby to seek for his living, but will you indeed remunerate him?' 'No,' said Kang; and Mencius then concluded, 'That being the case, it is not the purpose which you remunerate, but the work done.'
