7. 孟子ㅣ 自齊葬於魯시고 反於齊실(샤) 止於嬴이러시니 充虞ㅣ 請曰前日에 不知虞之不肖샤 使虞敦匠事ㅣ어시 嚴야 虞[ㅣ] 不敢請호니(이라니) 今願竊有請也노니 木若以美然더이다(이러이다)

孟子仕於齊에 喪母시고 歸葬於魯시니라 嬴은 齊南邑이라 充虞는 孟子弟子니 嘗董治作棺之事者也라 嚴은 急也라 木은 棺木也라 以는 已通니 以美는 太美也라

曰古者애(에) 棺槨[이] 無度더니(ㅣ러니) 中古애 棺이 七寸이오 槨을(이) 稱之야(케야) 自天子達於庶人니 非直爲觀美也ㅣ라 然後[에] 盡於人心이니라

度는 厚薄尺寸也라 中古는 周公制禮時也라 槨稱之는 與棺相稱也라 欲其堅厚久遠이요 非特爲人觀視之美而已니라

不得이란(이면) 不可以爲悅이며 無財란(면) 不可以爲悅이니 得之爲有財야(얀) 古之人이 皆用之니 吾何爲獨不然이리오

不得은 謂法制所不當得이라 得之爲有財는 言得之而又爲有財也라 或曰爲는 當作而라

且比化者야 無使土親膚ㅣ면 於人心에 獨無恔乎아

比는 猶爲也라 化者는 死者也라 恔는 快也라 言爲死者여 不使土親近其肌膚면 於人子之心에 豈不快然無所恨乎아

吾 聞之也호니 君子 不以天下儉其親이니라(이라니라)

送終之禮에 所當得爲而不自盡이면 是는 爲天下愛惜此物여 而薄於吾親也라

7. 맹자께서 제나라로부터 노나라에 가셔서 어머니 장례(葬禮)를 치르시고, 제나라로 돌아오시다가 영(嬴) 땅에 머무셨다. 제자 충우(充虞)가 여쭈었다. “지난번 저의 불초함을 알지 못하시고 저에게 관(棺) 짜는 일을 감독하게 하셨는데, 당시에는 경황 중이라 감히 여쭙지 못했습니다. 지금에 삼가 질문을 할까 합니다만 관으로 쓴 재목이 너무 좋았던 것 같습니다.”

[James Legge] Mencius went from Ch'î to Lû to bury his mother. On his return to Ch'î, he stopped at Ying, where Ch'ung Yü begged to put a question to him, and said, 'Formerly, in ignorance of my incompetency, you employed me to superintend the making of the coffin. As you were then pressed by the urgency of the business, I did not venture to put any question to you. Now, however, I wish to take the liberty to submit the matter. The wood of the coffin, it appeared to me, was too good.'

맹자께서 말씀하셨다. “옛날에는 내관(內棺)과 외관(外棺)이 일정한 한도가 없었는데, 중고시대(中古時代)에 내관은 두께가 일곱 치이고 외관도 이에 걸맞게 하여 천자(天子)로부터 서인(庶人)까지 통용되었으니, 이것은 단지 보기에 아름답게 하기 위해서가 아니라 그렇게 한 뒤에야 장사 지내는 사람의 마음에 흡족하기 때문일세.

[James Legge] Mencius replied, 'Anciently, there was no rule for the size of either the inner or the outer coffin. In middle antiquity, the inner coffin was made seven inches thick, and the outer one the same. This was done by all, from the sovereign to the common people, and not simply for the beauty of the appearance, but because they thus satisfied the natural feelings of their hearts.

법제(法制) 때문에 그렇게 할 수 없어도 기뻐할 수 없으며, 재력(財力) 때문에 그렇게 할 수 없어도 기뻐할 수 없는 것이네. 법제에도 할 수 있고 또 재력도 있으면 옛사람들이 모두 그러한 관곽(棺槨)을 썼으니, 내가 무엇 때문에 홀로 그렇게 하지 않겠는가?

[James Legge] 'If prevented by statutory regulations from making their coffins in this way, men cannot have the feeling of pleasure. If they have not the money to make them in this way, they cannot have the feeling of pleasure. When they were not prevented, and had the money, the ancients all used this style. Why should I alone not do so?

또 죽은 자를 위해서 흙이 살갗에 가까이 닿지 않게 한다면 사람의 마음에 홀로 만족하지 않겠는가?

[James Legge] 'And moreover, is there no satisfaction to the natural feelings of a man, in preventing the earth from getting near to the bodies of his dead?

내가 들으니 ‘군자는 천하 때문에 자기 어버이에게 박하게 하지는 않는다.’고 하였네.”

[James Legge] 'I have heard that the superior man will not for all the world be niggardly to his parents.'
