凡十六章이라

1. 任人이 有問屋廬子曰禮與食이 孰重고 曰禮重이니라

任은 國名이라 屋廬子는 名連이니 孟子弟子也라

色與禮ㅣ 孰重고

任人이 復問也라

曰禮重이니라 曰以禮食(면) 則飢而死고 不以禮食(이면) 則得食이라도 必以禮乎아 親迎(면) 則不得妻고 不親迎(이면) 則得妻ㅣ라도 必親迎乎아 屋廬子ㅣ 不能對야 明日[에] 之鄒야 以告孟子대 孟子[ㅣ] 曰於答是也[애] 何有ㅣ리오

何有는 不難也라

不揣其本(이오) 而齊其末이면 方寸之木을 可使高於岑樓ㅣ니라

集註

本은 謂下요 末은 謂上이라 方寸之木은 至卑니 喩食色이요 岑樓는 樓之高銳似山者니 至高니 喩禮라 若不取其下之平고 而升寸木於岑樓之上이면 則寸木反高고 岑樓反卑矣니라

金重於羽者(ㅣ) 豈謂一鉤金與一輿羽之謂哉리오

集註

鉤는 帶鉤也라 金本重而帶鉤小라 故로 輕니 喩禮有輕於食色者요 羽本輕而一輿多라 故로 重니 喩食色有重於禮者니라

取食之重者[와] 與禮之輕者而比之면 奚翅食重이며 取色之重者[와] 與禮之輕者而比之면 奚翅色重이리오

集註

禮食, 親迎은 禮之輕者也요 飢而死以滅其性과 不得妻而廢人倫은 食色之重者也라 奚翅는 猶言何但이니 言其相去懸絶여 不但有輕重之差而已라

往應之曰紾兄之臂而奪之食(면) 則得食고 不紾(면) 則不得食이라도(인댄) 則將紾之乎아 踰東家牆而摟其處子(면) 則得妻고 不摟(면) 則不得妻ㅣ라도(댄) 則將摟之乎아라

集註

紾은 戾也라 摟는 牽也라 處子는 處女也라 此二者는 禮與食色이 皆其重者로되 而以之相較면 則禮爲尤重也라○ 此章은 言義理事物이 其輕重이 固有大分이라 然이나 於其中에 又各自有輕重之別니 聖賢於此에 錯綜斟酌여 毫髮不差시니 固不肯枉尺而直尋이요 亦未嘗膠柱而調瑟이라 所以斷之를 一視於理之當然而已矣니라

1. 임(任)나라 사람이 맹자의 제자 옥려자(屋廬子)에게 물었다. “예(禮)를 지키는 것과 음식을 먹는 것 중에 어느 것이 더 중요합니까?” 옥려자가 대답하였다. “예를 지키는 것이 중요합니다.”

[James Legge] A man of Zan asked the disciple Wû-lû, saying, 'Is an observance of the rules of propriety in regard to eating, or eating merely, the more important?' The answer was, 'The observance of the rules of propriety is the more important.'

“여색[色]과 예를 지키는 것은 어느 것이 더 중요합니까?”

[James Legge] 'Is the gratifying the appetite of sex, or the doing so only according to the rules of propriety, the more important?' The answer again was, 'The observance of the rules of propriety in the matter is the more important.'

“예를 지키는 것이 중요합니다.” “예대로 먹으면 굶어 죽게 되고, 예대로 먹지 않으면 밥을 얻을 수 있더라도 반드시 예대로 해야 합니까? 친영(親迎)을 하면 아내를 얻지 못하고, 친영을 하지 않으면 아내를 얻을 수 있더라도 반드시 친영을 해야 합니까?” 옥려자가 대답하지 못하고 다음날 추(鄒)나라에 가서 맹자께 아뢰자, 맹자께서 말씀하셨다. “이에 대답하는 것이 무엇이 어렵겠는가?

[James Legge] The man pursued, 'If the result of eating only according to the rules of propriety will be death by starvation, while by disregarding those rules we may get food, must they still be observed in such a case? If according to the rule that he shall go in person to meet his wife a man cannot get married, while by disregarding that rule he may get married, must he still observe the rule in such a case?' Wû-lû was unable to reply to these questions, and the next day he went to Tsâu, and told them to Mencius. Mencius said, 'What difficulty is there in answering these inquiries?'

그 근본을 헤아리지 않고 그 끝만을 가지런히 한다면, 한 치 되는 나무를 높은 누각보다 높게 할 수 있네.

[James Legge] 'If you do not adjust them at their lower extremities, but only put their tops on a level, a piece of wood an inch square may be made to be higher than the pointed peak of a high building.

쇠가 깃털보다 무겁다는 것은 어찌 쇠갈고리 한 개와 한 수레 가득 실은 깃털을 비교해서 말함이겠는가?

[James Legge] 'Gold is heavier than feathers;-- but does that saying have reference, on the one hand, to a single clasp of gold, and, on the other, to a waggon-load of feathers?

먹는 것 중에서 중요한 것과 예를 지키는 것 중에서 가벼운 것을 취하여 비교한다면, 어찌 먹는 것이 중하다 뿐이겠으며, 여색을 추구하는 것 중에서 중요한 것과 예를 지키는 것 중에서 가벼운 것을 취하여 비교한다면 어찌 여색을 추구하는 것이 중하다 뿐이겠는가?

[James Legge] 'If you take a case where the eating is of the utmost importance and the observing the rules of propriety is of little importance, and compare the things together, why stop with saying merely that the eating is more important? So, taking the case where the gratifying the appetite of sex is of the utmost importance and the observing the rules of propriety is of little importance, why stop with merely saying that the gratifying the appetite is the more important?

자네는 가서 그 질문에 이렇게 대답하게. ‘형의 팔을 비틀어서 먹을 것을 빼앗으면 먹을 수 있고, 형의 팔을 비틀지 않으면 먹을 수 없는 경우에도 형의 팔을 비틀겠는가? 동쪽 집의 담을 뛰어넘어 그 집의 처녀를 끌고 오면 아내를 얻고, 끌고 오지 않으면 아내를 얻지 못할 경우에도 처녀를 끌고 오겠는가?’라고.”

[James Legge] 'Go and answer him thus, "If, by twisting your elder brother's arm, and snatching from him what he is eating, you can get food for yourself, while, if you do not do so, you will not get anything to eat, will you so twist his arm ? If by getting over your neighbour's wall, and dragging away his virgin daughter, you can get a wife, while if you do not do so, you will not be able to get a wife, will you so drag her away?"'
