10. 子張이 問崇德辨惑대 子[ㅣ] 曰 主忠信[며] 徙義ㅣ 崇德也ㅣ니라
愛之[란] 欲其生고 惡之[란] 欲其死니 旣欲其生이오 又欲其死ㅣ 是[ㅣ] 惑也ㅣ니라

愛惡는 人之常情也라 然이나 人之生死有命하여 非可得而欲也라 以愛惡而欲其生死면 則惑矣요 旣欲其生하고 又欲其死면 則惑之甚也니라

此는 詩小雅我行其野之詞也라 舊說에 夫子引之하여 以明欲其生死者 不能使之生死하니 如此詩所言不足以致富而適足以取異也라 程子曰 此는 錯簡이니 當在第十六篇齊景公有馬千駟之上이라 因此下文亦有齊景公字而誤也니라 ○ 楊氏曰 堂堂乎張也여 難與並爲仁矣니 則非誠善補過하여 不蔽於私者라 故로 告之如此하시니라
[James Legge] Tsze-chang having asked how virtue was to be exalted, and delusions to be discovered, the Master said, “Hold faithfulness and sincerity as first principles, and be moving continually to what is right, -- this is the way to exalt one's virtue.
10. 자장(子張)이 덕(德)을 높이고 미혹을 분별하는 방법을 묻자, 공자(孔子)께서 말씀하셨다. “충(忠)과 신(信)을 주로 하며 의(義)로 옮겨가는 것이 덕(德)을 높이는 것이다.
[James Legge] You love a man and wish him to live; you hate him and wish him to die. Having wished him to live, you also wish him to die. This is a case of delusion.
상대를 사랑할 때에는 그가 살기를 바라고, 상대를 미워할 때에는 그가 죽기를 바라나니, 이미 살기를 바라고 또 죽기를 바라는 것이 미혹이다.
[James Legge] ‘It may not be on account of her being rich, yet you come to make a difference.’”
진실로 부유하게 하지도 못하고 다만 남들에게 괴이함만 취할 뿐이다.”
