25. 陳子禽이 謂子貢曰 子[ㅣ] 爲恭也ㅣ언뎡 仲尼[ㅣ] 豈賢於子乎ㅣ리오(ㅣ시리오)

爲恭은 謂恭敬하여 推遜其師也라
子貢[ㅣ] 曰 君子ㅣ 一言[에] 以爲知며(오) 一言[에] 以爲不知니 言不可不愼也ㅣ니라

責子禽不謹言이라
夫子之不可及也 猶天之不可階而升也ㅣ니라

階는 梯也라 大可爲也어니와 化不可爲也라 故로 曰不可階而升也니라
夫子之得邦家者댄(앤) 所謂立之斯立며 道之斯行며 綏之斯來며 動之斯和야 其生也榮고 其死也哀니(리니) 如之何其可及也ㅣ리오

立之는 謂植其生也라 道는 引也니 謂敎之也라 行은 從也라 綏는 安也요 來는 歸附也라 動은 謂鼓舞之也요 和는 所謂於變時雍이니 言其感應之妙가 神速如此라 榮은 謂莫不尊親이요 哀는 則如喪考妣라 程子曰 此는 聖人之神化가 上下與天地同流者也라 ○ 謝氏曰 觀子貢稱聖人語하면 乃知晩年進德이 蓋極於高遠也라 夫子之得邦家者인댄 其鼓舞群動이 捷於桴鼓影響하니 人雖見其變化나 而莫窺其所以變化也라 蓋不離於聖이요 而有不可知者存焉하니 聖而進於不可知之之神矣니 此는 殆難以思勉及也니라


[James Legge] Ch'an Tsze-ch'in, addressing Tsze-kung, said, “You are too modest. How can Chung-nî be said to be superior to you?”
25. 진자금(陳子禽)이 자공(子貢)에게 말하였다. “그대가 공손해서 그렇지 중니(仲尼)가 어찌 그대보다 낫겠는가?”
[James Legge] Tsze-kung said to him, “For one word a man is often deemed to be wise, and for one word he is often deemed to be foolish. We ought to be careful indeed in what we say.
자공(子貢)이 말하였다. “군자(君子)는 한 마디 말에 지혜롭다고 하기도 하고 한 마디 말에 지혜롭지 못하다고 하기도 하니 말을 조심하지 않을 수 없다.
[James Legge] “Our Master cannot be attained to, just in the same way as the heavens cannot be gone up by the steps of a stair.
선생님에게 미치기 어려운 것은 마치 하늘에 사다리를 놓아도 오를 수 없는 것과 같다.
[James Legge] Were our Master in the position of the ruler of a state or the chief of a family, we should find verified the description which has been given of a sage's rule:-- he would plant the people, and forthwith they would be established; he would lead them on, and forthwith they would follow him; he would make them happy, and forthwith multitudes would resort to his dominions; he would stimulate them, and forthwith they would be harmonious. While he lived, he would be glorious. When he died, he would be bitterly lamented. How is it possible for him to be attained to?”
선생님께서 나라를 얻으신다면 이른바 ‘세우면 이에 서고 인도하면 이에 따르고 편안하게 해주면 이에 따라오고 감동시키면 이에 화평하게 되어, 살아 계실 때에는 영광스럽고 돌아가시면 슬퍼한다.’는 것이니, 어떻게 미칠 수 있겠는가?”
